A vibrant energy is percolating throughout the classroom as students begin to notice signs of spring: sun, blossoms and bird songs. This compliments nicely the conversations we have been having in the classroom around the symbolism of the new year (e.g. Spring Festival) and around Black History/Futures Month as students look back at the events and injustices of the past while walking forward towards a brighter and more just future (see Sankofa bird below).

Feet forward, head turned backward, the Sankofa bird reflects on the past to build a successful future.

In mathematics, students have been developing their proficiency in subtraction and multiplication. Carrying over and borrowing always pose challenges, but we are continuously working to ingrain a sense of place-value in all the math work we do.

Math work outdoors

In Sciences students have been inquiring about the necessities of life; what humans need to survive on the territory we live on. We have been assisted by the wonderful videos of the Heiltsuk village site Húy̓at; and the harvesting and agricultural technologies and knowledge they employed.

Unfortunately, we have also had many class discussions and meetings over the last few weeks to review expectations around kindness and respect. On the bright side of things students have been presenting, on their own accord, about various topics ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Mineral Sciences.

Students have been presenting books to the class during reading time
