February and March are always significant months in teaching. Many important events and celebrations bring out the best learning in students.
In the library, students researched, reported on and celebrated through poetry, the achievements of important community members. We had a fun time learning about each-others’ important figures while participating in a Kahoot quiz with the other grade 3 class.
While working with their Big Buddies, students finished writing and “weaving” their blankets inspired by Sylvain Rivard’s book “Couverture — Blanket — Maksa”.
Students researched important historical figures in Black history, putting together PowerPoints and research papers to demonstrate what they learned. We also learned about Inuit culture through a MOA provided kit. Students were able to hold, manipulate and learn about Inuit possessions.
Students from the UBC Food Systems Program ran a Food Literacy workshop with students. It taught students about the various types of teas that can be made from common wild and garden-grown plants: Rosemary, Thyme, Sage, Douglas Fir and Stinging Nettle. The students enjoyed being tea sommeliers for an afternoon.
We also explored the science of sound and some characteristics of music via sound labs. Students are tasked with designing and constructing their own instrument over the break.
Furthermore, Students participated in the Spring Sale using their bank account savings. Students bought various numbers of tickets, which when drawn, gave them the opportunity to buy journals, pencils and erasers. Elsewhere in Math, students begun studying the fundamentals and concepts behind multiplication.
